Large Grey Beetle

I live in Northern New Hampshire and a couple of weeks ago while walking through a parking lot I saw a huge insect I have never seen anything like it here in NH. ( or anywhere for that matter). It was a dull grey color, no shine, and the back split down the middle like a beetle but it was flat. It was at least three inches long. I wish I had taken a photo but at the time I just looked at it and said, boy that is strange. It was wide and the wing backs met at the tail end.
If anyone has an idea on what this is I am very curious. I thought it might have dropped off a vehicle traveling by.

giant water bug?
The size and description match that of one of the giant water bugs.

big grey bug
I really don't think it was a gian water bug. It was a dull not shiny, light grey. There was a line right down the back of the wings separation and it was a wide ovoid shape, kind of flattened. I don't remember any front parts that looked deadly. I wish I had taken a photo because now I don't remember what the head looked like.
It was a stop in your tracks and look at this type thing. Another person stopped too.
