Whirligig:-)
Ah, this is a whirligig beetle, family Gyrinidae. Could be a Dineutus species, as they are pretty large, and they actually stop moving sometimes, unlike other genera:-)

Yes . . . but I thought I would fall in the lake tracking the thing in my viewfinder while waiting for it to take its 20 second pit stop. :)
