Since there is a fringe on the side, all around the body and the yellow on the legs seem to go 3/4 high, I would seriously think about Eupeodes americanus. A picture of the face would help, if you can. If the the face is more yellow than black, there are good chances that you have a Eupeodes americanus. If I remember well Eristalis transversa has legs that are totally yellow and the top of the thorax is not so metallic.

Correction
I just did a search and a couple of observations on some specimens I have and John is correct. Eupeodes americanus has only the first yellow band that is split in two parts. On your photo Naomi, we can see there is another yellow spot, or incomplete band before the one that is separate in the middle. I just put a picture of an Eupeodes americanus on my account if you want to compare. The only point I find strange, is the part over the thorax, it should be more flat gray for an Eristalis transversa and actually it looks more metallic greenish, like in the case of an Eupeodes americanus.

Thanks Patrick, I tried over the past few days to relocate the fly but no luck. I wanted to try a few more shots at different angles. But I'll keep looking.

How about
Eristalis transversa (Transverse Flower Fly) ?

I agree with John.
Thorax looks a bit different than the norm, but those brilliant abdominal colors are convincing.

Thanks John. Naomi
Thanks John.
