It was acting very much like a Robberfly.

Yes.
Your ID is correct. The only species of Mydas with a red band on the abdomen as far as I know. They may mimic a large spider wasp in the genus Anoplius.

Thanks. Like some other people on this site, I too saw it chasing after bees but not actualy catching them.
