Aphoebantus - Aphoebantus conurus - female

Aphoebantus - Aphoebantus conurus - Female
Wagon Road Canyon area, near Lockwood Valley Road, elev. ~4800 feet., Ventura County, California, USA
May 18, 2006
Size: 11mm
Genus confirmed by Neal Evenhuis (Bishop Museum, Honolulu, HI). Evenhuis remarked that the genus Aphoebantus (much like the genus Villa) is in need of revision, with many new species. (personal communication)

I observed several females ovipositing directly into the sand. Evenhuis remarked that Aphoebantus is unusual among bee flies in this respect.

Moved from Aphoebantus.
