Hi folks,

A bit of history on this bug -- it was posted on TX-Butterfly at the time of the observation. The specimen is now in the collection at UT-Austin. The determination was made by Agapema monographer Ric Peigler (Peigler, R.S. & R.O. Kendall. 1993. A Review of the Genus Agapema (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae). Proceedings of the Denver Museum of Natural History (3)5:1-22.). There is a confusion among the names, A. dyari and A. galbina are different taxa, and A. dyari is fairly well known recently from the Trans-Pecos of Texas.

here is another recent individual:

I've made a guide page
and moved this one to it. It was languishing too long unrecognized. :)

Thank you! tony g
Thank you!

This is beautiful!
I would make a guide page, but I've been waiting for someone (an editor, that is) more knowledgeable than me to weigh in on the taxonomy. According to All-Leps, dyari appears to be an old name for A. galpina.

And if I have this correct, then this species has not been reported in the US since 1960, according to this page.

How come no-one but me has left a comment on this one yet?! This is very exciting!

Lovely moth. Looks like a major Texas rarity. The guys at TX leps should hear about this population if this canyon holds one.
