Velvet Ant, Dasymutilla klugii - Dasymutilla klugii

Moved from Dasymutilla.

I agree with Kevin's ID, I collected one in this area.

D. klugii
Based on the location, coloration and a guess at the size, this is D. klugii. In Texas, there are multiple species that share this coloration, however, all but one or two of them are less than .5 inches long with shorter setae. If the specimen was relatively small, it is possibly D. klugiodes or another species.

Thanks!

I don't remember this being particularly large, but i would have guessed in the half-inch or a little larger range.

Identification
I would stick with D. klugii because of the general appearance, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was something else.

Another D. klugii
What do you think about this one, also from Texas?

It was large, about 25 mm (1 inch), or slightly less.
Thanks for any ideas.

Probably D. gorgon
One of the only other large species with this color pattern is D. gorgon. It is separated from D. klugii because of the very large head. To me, this specimen's head looks much broader than the first specimen. I would need to check some other characters to be absolutely sure.
