Explanation of Names
Trichoniscidae G.O. Sars 1899
Numbers
almost 90 genera with hundreds of species total
Range
Subcosmopolitan, with the highest diversity set around the Mediterranean. In North America about a third of the species present are introduced from Europe, while most of the rest are tiny-ranged cave endemics (mostly in Amerigoniscus and Brackenridgia), although many species of the native genus Miktoniscus are surface-dwelling and 2 species (spinosus and medcofi) are widespread across the east
Remarks
Most Trichoniscids people see in North America are introduced from Europe, the native species tend to be uncommon or have very narrow ranges and habitat needs (asides from the eastern genus Miktoniscus)
