wasp
Cross Plains, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA
July 30, 2011
Size: just under 2mm
I found a small cocoon on the underside of a leaf of kale. Today 5 small wasps emerged. I think there may be more inside the cocoon.

Pteromalid…
Features such as blue coloration, long antennae, a large armoured thorax, wing venation, and a short pronotum suggest this family. Pteromalids attack a wide range of Diptera, and many hyperparasitoids including braconid hyperparasitoids are known. Thanks for the closeup Ilona.
