Size: 3-4 mm wide (blotchy)
Mine on upper leaf surface of Zigzag Goldenrod (Solidago flexicaulis) Arrow-leaved Aster (Symphyotrichum sagittifolium). Along wooded trail.

A few thoughts...
- I think this is actually Eurybia divaricata or another similar "aster"
- There seem to be mines of two different insects on this leaf. I suspect that the narrow, fragmented one is an Ophiomyia, and that the other one is Sumitrosis inaequalis. Both of those would actually make more sense if this is some kind of Symphyotrichum, actually. Maybe in another five or six years I'll have a better idea...

Good call, this is Arrow-leaved Aster (Symphyotrichum sagittifolium). Zigzag Goldenrod (Solidago flexicaulis) was intermixed in the same stand, but its name was misapplied to this photo.

This may all be the work of one insect after all. I'll have to keep an eye out for these this year.
