Banded Tussock moth caterpillar - Acronicta americana

Banded Tussock moth caterpillar - Acronicta americana
Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York, USA
August 4, 2011
Size: 1.5'
My daughter gave it sum grass to eat, and it ignored it and tried to escape. I went outside and got sum tree bark and it has been entertained with it making something ever since.

Moved from ID Request.

haveyour daughter show you where she
found it then look at the trees..(Larvae feed on leaves of alder, ash, birch, elm, hickory, maple, oak, poplar, walnut, willow and other deciduous trees) pick leaves from the nearest trees to there she found it and it will eat the one it prefers. then if she wants to keep it you can rear it and it should emerge as a moth next summer. it will starve on bark im afraid

Maybe an American Dagger moth caterpillar?
