Moved
Moved from Sphinx.

Appears to be
The Waved Sphinx Ceratomia undulosa, I just can't tell what host plant this is. C. undulosa feeds on ash and related splecies (i.e. lilac).

Green Ash
I see an intersection of three "leaves" at Nancy's thumb in her first photo, representing the junction of three leaflets (one terminal plus two laterals) of a compound leaf. The serrate edges of the leaflets indicate ash (Fraxinus) and the open habitat suggests Green Ash (F. pennsylvanica) in particular; it is a common invader of old fields at this site.

After the fact...
I was looking up green ash shortly after posting this, you're right, which would certainly support my original ID.
