Banded Hairstreak- Satyrium calanus
Matches "Butterflies through Binoculars" image perfectly, at least what's left. It is listed as common and distribution includes ME.

I like your idea of numbering multiple images like that. I might borrow it:)

Have you considered the 'Northern Southern'
-Satyrium favonius ontario? It's so brown, I think that might be a closer fit. Unfortunately, with the damage to the hindwing it's hard to be really sure. Same page in BTB if you have access to that.

Hi Hannah
I wanted to account for the marks in both wings forward of the more prominent postmedian bands and Southern Northern doesn't have them in my 1999 edition, where it is on the page before Banded Hairstreak. The marks in that area on other Hairstreaks are "more different" from the photo than Banded.

I agree that it is hard to be really sure given the damage, and its a pretty worn individual. I hope I wasn't precipitous with the ID, Vincent.

V J Hickey. see the replacement of 8/11; no damage

Ah, I see what you mean, John
and indeed the picture in my BTB (which by the way is the 2000 FL edition) does not have the forward marking on the upper wing. So I think I'm the one who's wearing orthopedic shoes (to quote Patrick - i.e. I stand corrected). I was thrown off because the banded hairstreak image has two rows of white markings forming each 'band' rather than one. But looking at the text (which is less fun of course), I see that this is only occasional. Your ID skills are better than mine, I think! Sorry for the confusion, Vincent!

Good learning experience, anyway,

Hannah
