Gemmed Satyr - Cyllopsis gemma

Gemmed Satyr - Cyllopsis gemma
World Birding Center HQ at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, Hidalgo County, Texas, USA
Photographed in early 2006. The colors in the background are my butterfly bait which attracted this critter to a log at the edge of the woods near our boat ramp; usually not that color, but I think this batch had a bit more watermelon in it than usual...

Bait
I thought Guiness and bananas, mashed well and aged, was the best combo?

not so sure
Mashed overripe bananas with Guinness stout is an excellent base, but I have heard of many variations. Many people add brown sugar and extra yeast; some use molasses instead of sugar. Some beetle-baiters report great luck with just molasses and yeast, no fruit or beer. One moth guy says he's used chablis in place of the beer; I go for Shiner Bock myself...

And many fruits, suitably aged, work well even without the yeast, sweeteners, or alcohol, especially fruits rich in sugar. Watermelon, papaya, mango, even oranges and grapefruits have all been reported to attract scavenging butterflies. I often add grapes and berries to my mix; have not tried them separately, but have seen overripe, wrinkly Texas Lantana berries bring in lots of Asterocampa spp. and at least one Malachite!
