Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA June 5, 2006 Size: 1cm
These flys were found on Delphinium flower buds and on more than one plant. They were very still making them the best behaved insect I ever photographed too bad I couldn't get a clearer shot.
I searched the fly page and the only closest match was a fly with a fungus .
While these fly's appear very bloated the abdomens were smooth and free of any powdery/fuzzy like growth.
On the other hand a few of the fly's in the group looked as if they were dehydrated like the one to the far most right in this photo.
I am curious to what this fungus is or if not a fungus , what type of fly ?
