big brown ant - Camponotus americanus

big brown ant - Camponotus americanus
Woburn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
June 5, 2006
Size: ~7mm
There were a few of these ants walking all around the leaf surfaces.

Camponotus cf. americanus - minor worker
Left maxillary palp is clearly visible. With such a level of magnification and picture quality, most species of most ant genera should be readily identified at the species level, provided a complete "virtual collection" is available.
