Ding-ding-ding-ding-ding! You are absolutely correct with your ID. The narcissus bulb fly, Merodon equestris, is highly variable, and this is one of the paler variations.

I only ventured it when I saw Nearctica only lists one species.

Narcisis bulbs, so that's who I've been battling all these years! :)
