Dancing Fly - Taeniaptera trivittata

Dancing Fly - Taeniaptera trivittata
Brandywine, MD, Prince George's County, Maryland, USA
June 3, 2006
Size: medium
This fly was doing a very interesting "dance" waving its front feet. Has to be some reason--especially since those white feet really are obvious.

Micropezid
I think this is Rainieria again. Which may be the most common Micropezid in the woodlands of the east outside of Florida. I have seen images of Compsobata and Micropeza this month. I urge everyone to shoot these flies and observe behavior.

This one looks to have the dull thorax
of Taeniaptera, so we didn't move it

Stilt-legged fly
Specifically, perhaps this one (below) - there's a distinctive wing pattern which I think I also see on yours. Those rapidly moving front legs simulate wasp or ant antennae, I think.

Correct and correct!
This is Taeniaptera trivittata and the fore leg waving is used to imitate ichneumonid wasps.
