Another gypsy moth look alike.

We're thinking your first instincts were correct
Wagner says "Recognizable in all instars by bulging seta-bearing warts to either side of the head". We see what looks like the start of the blue warts on the thorax and abdomen, and the defensive glands on A6 and A7. If it's not a gypsy, it would have to be something very close!

I'm curious as well. I found a large number of these about 4 months ago. They varied in color but were clearly the same species. Some were slightly greener. Never got to see what they became.
