The burrow is almost filled. At this point it was possible to observe that rocks were carefully placed, and moved back and forth until they fit.

These are extraordinary insects to watch. Quite a few silver-bodied species in CA. Always a pleasure anyway.

Joyce Gross posted one from Afton Canyon, Mojave Desert, also silvery thorax and reddish legs, but different abdominal pattern.
Just downloaded an updated (6/1/06) catalog of Ammophila species, but it doesn't include a key.
I have yet to post some more Robber Fly images from Lockwood Valley.

Yes, that is the world catalog. Has distributions but no descriptions. I have the eastern list on my site but not for CA.
