Chantilly, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA

Size: approx 1.5 in. long
This moth was resting on the side of a plant pot in the early evening. The large size (approx 1.5 inches long) is what caught my attention.

7787 -- Waved Sphinx Moth -- Ceratomia undulosa

I would have been looking for a long time, trying to fit this into a Catocala species (which is what I hoped it was).
