This was found near a pine forest at a building where they often die and drop from the trees. Sightings of dead ones in the area are quite common on the sidewalk pavement.

Tibicen tibicen (chloromerus) ssp. australis
These are difficult for many to recognize.
The Florida populations belong to the ssp. australis which differs in color and pattern from the nominate race.

The most important "key" to id. is knowing what species and forms occur in your area.

Unfortunately, these guys are subject to geographic variation, thus making the use of the few available resources impractical for all areas.

Based on physical characters, this particular form of T. tibicen (ssp. australis) often keys out to T. pruinosus.

In conjunction with geographic variation, there have been numerous erroneous id's through the years leading to incorrect geographic range maps....often making id of a specimen even more difficult.
