Moth? - Orgyia leucostigma - female

Moth? - Orgyia leucostigma - Female
Hammond, Ontario, Canada
August 23, 2011
Size: 1.5 cm
Earlier this afternoon I came across what I believe may be a wingless moth laying eggs on one of our maple trees. Interestingly, she is doing so on top of an empty cocoon. Can anybody help with an ID? Thanks.

Maple is in fact a known host for this species, according to the HOSTS Database.

I
think it is a sugar maple, Acer saccharum. Thank you so much for the information. :)

Orgyia
This site has info on species of this genus, many of which have wingless females that lay eggs on top of their coccons and includes some info on how to differentiate three similar looking species http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/foltz/eny3541/Tussock/Orgyia.htm Cool find!

Orgyia
I've been hoping to find a wingless female for years. If it hadn't have been for that bright white egg mass sticking out like a sore thumb on the tree, I doubt I ever would have noticed her. I am surprised that she is only 18 inches from the ground...and here all of these years I've been looking up. I read the info on the linked site and on bugguide and didn't see maple on the list of food trees, but interestingly there is a larch tree about 10 feet away from her tree. Thank you both for your help. This was quite an exciting find for me. :)

Tussock moth
This appears to be a White-marked tussock moth.
