Tenebrionid Beetle - Cryptoglossa variolosa

Tenebrionid Beetle - Cryptoglossa variolosa
Tucson, Tumamoc Hill, Pima County, Arizona, USA
June 9, 2006
Size: 2cm
A Tenebrionid I'm guessing. Can anyone help ID it to subfamily and genus. Asking too much to get it to species probably. Active on hillside on a nice warm evening in Tucson.

to genus page.

Tenebrionidae: Cryptoglossa sp.
A definite Teneb. Cryptoglossa verrucosa probably.

Thanks Donald
Thank you - I was beginning to think I'd never get this guy ID'd. Didn't say before, but they have a curious walking gait - very quick then hesitate, quick, hesitate etc. I have since seen others at the same locality.

Death-Feigning Beetle
Looks as though it could be a twin to this beetle seen near the Goldfield Mountains on the Maricopa / Pima County Line near Apache Junction. The behavior you describe is also identical.

Yes
indeed, I believe it is. After posting this beetle, I continued to see these throughout the summer and into the fall in many foothills and canyon locations throughout SE Arizona.

Possibly, however,
its shape makes me think this might be a zopherid.

unknown beetle
Thanks Jim - I'm a beginner with invertebrates of all kinds and have limited references. BugGuide is a great learning tool.

Ooops!
I thought I had a match, but after finding a better image, it's clear it wasn't.
