Revised (10 April 2014): Tomas Mustelin suggests this specimen may be Apamea cogitata.

This specimen may be a worn example of a Thoughtful Apamea (Hodges #9367).

Gosh, that Apamea species wasn't even on my radar! Thanks for introducing me to a new species! And I love the common name! This moth is my mascot! I feel pretty darn ignorant when it somes to trying to identify our brown noctuid moths! Well, that goes for the geometrids too, I guess. ;-)

I photographed another Apamea in the same location a couple of weeks ago that seemed to bear a striking resemblance to the Doubtful Apamea (Hodges #9367). I'm going to stare at that specimen for a while to rule out the possibility that this individual isn't an example of A. dubitans. These darker moths are soooo bewildering! ;-)
