Here you see the coiled cord of the ring flash disappearing through the slot on the blue shade, connecting the camera to the flash. This is how I use the light arena over 95% of the time.
When I have a chunk of fungus or wood that I want to photograph, however, I normally take the shade and deli container out and either use the ring flash on my camera lens as it was designed to do, or I use no flash at all since I have a stationary target.
