Banded Sphinx caterpillar - Eumorpha fasciatus

Banded Sphinx caterpillar - Eumorpha fasciatus
Wake County, North Carolina, USA
September 27, 2002
Thanks to all who helped on this sphinx--see comments. It was feeding on Knotweed, Polygonum in a wetland area.

definitely isn't Pandorus
Markings are quite different. Usual host plants for E. fasciatus are in the Onagraceae (Primrose Family), so this one is still perhaps a bit "off" in its choices.

Moved from Pandorus Sphinx.

Eumorpha pandorus
There's a third instar on this page that looks even more like yours

Thanks, looks like Eumorpha pandorus
Ah thanks. I've seen a later instar--I did not know the early instars were so different.

Durham, North Carolina

Realtive?
It appears to be relative to the green horned worm (aka tomato/tobacco worm)

Eumorpha achemon ?
It looks like Eumorpha achemon, but I thought that fed on grape, virginia creeper and other vines.
