green horned catapillar

my son found the same thing in Enfield CT while digging a hole in the back yard for bush. We have it in dirt in can with airholes. It appears to be same length, quite chubby and we were afraid to pick up with hands due to horn and what appear to be funny looking legs or mouth at opposite end of horn. horn appears to be back end.

it probably will pupate and become a pupa which will overwinter..it needs to be sheltered from the elements perhaps in a garage, but not inside the inside temps will cause it to emerge when it is cold and it will die if freed. ..if it is unable to crawl it probably is in the process esp if it had dug into the dirt..and wont be able to redig.
if you shelter it thru the winter you will get to see it emerge next spring or summer, as a large and beautiful moth. :-) be sure if you do, that you also provide it with something to hold onto and hang from when it emerges..so it can inflate its otherwise you will have a large crippled moth.
