Beaverpond or Common Baskettail? - Epitheca

Beaverpond or Common Baskettail? - Epitheca
Coventry, Kent County, Rhode Island, USA
June 11, 2006
I'm not sure which species of Epitheca this is. It lacks are large basal patch but I understand through my research that cynosura's basal patch varies in size and is sometimes all but absent. I'm leaning toward E.canis. Input would be appreciated.
These photos were taken with a Canon 20D and a Canon 180mm Macro lens.

Thanks,

Michelle

Difficult distinction
These two species are so much alike that even your excellent images can't make it clear which you have.

For that reason, both these images are being moved to the genus-level guide.

Females are harder
It looks like it is a female and the females are even harder to tell apart.

You have to capture and get a look at her reproductive area (underside of the tail), the slight diferences in shape there will determine which she is. I did have a website that has great sketches of this but they seem to be down more than up....and I haven't found others as good. You can kinda see it in the clos ups of the tail in this site: http://public.fotki.com/gstrick3/6_dragonfly_scans_1/290b_e_cynosura2.html

Great shots tho!
