The park ranger said he hadn't seen an insect like this before. It had surprisingly strong claws on its front legs, powerful enough to pry my fingers apart. Once released on the ground, it was able to run very quickly.

This is the only the second mole cricket on Bug Guide for Virginia.

Good Find
I still can't believe a park ranger, an "outdoor" professional had never seen a mole cricket, at least in a book. I bet Yogi Bear would have known. Mole crickets are just to cool.
