Pinned Specimen - Scarites subterraneus

Pinned Specimen - Scarites subterraneus
Lakeland, Polk County, Florida, USA
June 5, 2006
Size: 14 mm
This beetle was found dead, hence the odd pose. It was on the dry, sandy soccer field at school. The front legs appear different from some ground beetles. They remind me of digging legs like those on a dung beetle or mole cricket. A very helpful guide can be found here. http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/choate/florida_carabidae_new.pdf

Scarites?
I think this is in the genus Scarites. It looks like S. subterraneus here in Maryland but there may be some different species down in Florida.

I believe you are right!
Guide pages used did not show legs and and a poorer quality head to compare. Thanks!
