Bugatti - the "Fastback" "Spyder" I found in my backyard - Araneus
San Francisco , California, USA
August 26, 2011
Size: about one half inch long
Hi!

So I found this guy on the wall of the house next door to me in my backyard. I'm in San Francisco, on the west side of town, which is significant due to the summertime presence of fog keeping the temperatures cool and moist. This specimen was collected in the morning.

I've been calling it "Bugatti" after the French super car manufacturer, as in the Bugatti history are "Fastback" And "Spyder" models, and with it's sloped abdomen shape it seemed appropriate.

I have more photos than posted, but alas, I cannot get anymore. I felt horrible keeping him in a jar. I tried feeding him an earwig, but they fought, and I didn't want to stress him out so I released him. We then had some VERY foggy days, and I'm trying to convince myself that "he" was pleased with this development and is thriving in the dahlia plant where I released him.

I posted the photos on Reddit.com and got some feedback that seems pretty close, but nothing seemed concrete. at the behest of a post on that thread, I'm re-posting here in an attempt to get a more qualified opinion.
Thanks for any feedback!

This looks like Araneus angulatus to me. I'm anxious to find out what others think.

Araneus angulatus
isn't found in the US, so I think that's not likely.

it's not SUPPOSED to be
...that's why I was so curious about this spider. So what is your impression?

Dave, please post the vental (underside) view! I know you have it.

Whoops - it was in the initial batch, I must have just forgotten to upload when posting. It's not the greatest, as it was through a jar and he moved when the shudder clicked, but hopefully it's useful.

Thanks!

Araneus sp.
Next time you see one can you take a ventral view... even a close-up of the epigynyum/scape?

I meant to include my Ventral photo in the original post. Unfortunately, it's not that great, and I already released him back into the yard.

If we meet again, I'll be sure to get close up underneath.

Thanks for viewing!
