Caterpillar - Euphydryas

Caterpillar - Euphydryas
Mt Diablo State Park, California, USA
June 13, 2006
Anyone know what this caterpillar is? Maybe a swallowtail?

I've done a lot of comparing over the last few days, and this is almost certainly in this genus. I don't know for sure the species. One might guess that the foodplant could be the Mimulus the pupa is attached to, a favorite foodplant of Euphydryas chalcedona. I agree with Will, it probably is that species, but I'm not sure how to rule out E. editha.

Moved from Brushfooted Butterflies.

Looks like a chrysalis (pupa) to me
but I don't recognize it. Swallowtails usually have a silk girdle, though, which I don't see here.

Checkerspot
but not sure which one.

Probably E. chalcedona, Varia
Probably E. chalcedona, Variable Checkerspots are incredibly common on Mount Diablo
