Not sure but thought it could have eggs on her back?? No I did not kill it. It ran off after I took the pictures.

I think it is likely the commonly photographed Neoscona crucifera. Compare with others here.

It doesn't have eggs on its back. No spiders in our range carry eggs on their backs... though the wolf spiders carry their young on their backs.

thank you for the identification. Is there a common name for this spider?

 
common name
Some people call it a barn spider... but I don't like that because there is another spider called a barn spider in the genus Araneus. Having more than one spider with the same common name can get confusing.
