Bean Leafroller - Urbanus proteus

Bean Leafroller - Urbanus proteus
Greenwood County, South Carolina, USA
August 11, 2004
Bean leafroller caterpillar. Found on green bean plant. Approx. 12mm. I think this is a ~3rd level instar since the red spots on the head are not visible, which are supposed to appear in later instars. I've captured a couple and will attempt to document their further development.

Interesting to see this larva
as I see the adults often in my yard. As far as I know I don't have any host plants, so I wonder if one of my neighbors is growing beans. I also liked the link with its analysis of exactly how many larvae per bean plant constitute a pest!
