Robber fly on raspberry leaves (Promachus rufipes)? - Promachus rufipes - Male
Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve, Loudoun County, Virginia, USA
August 12, 2011
Size: 1 inch
I was scanning for bees but these flies kept catching my eye instead. They seemed to be quite numerous.
I'm not sure how one determines the sex of a fly so didn't hazard a guess.
And are those orange appendages at the end of its legs milkweed pollinia or... feet?

Yes, P. rufipes male

Looks more like Promachus rufipes ?
Now that I've looked at the other flies in Asilidae...

those are pulvilli
see http://www.geller-grimm.de/morph/morph05.htm, so i guess you could call them feet ;>

Ah pulvilli! Of course!
Very interesting. Thanks for taking the time to figure that out. One learns a new thing every day! Now to try to use this new word in a sentence...
