Collected nine or ten of these in dry cakes of slime mold that had grown in a mulched shrub and flower bed around a house. I gave this beetle a bath but neglected to give it a good scrubbing, which it rather needed :-)

I'm wondering if this species could be in family Sphin*didae, a new family for bugguide. During the past year or so I've checked most slime molds I've seen and have only found beetles twice -- once during the Maine Coleptera Blitz. On that occasion they were not Sphin*didae, but I don't recall what they were determined to be and I didn't get photos before turning them in. Apparently several families of beetles make a living off slime mold and have been refered to as slime mold beetles. The ones made famous for having been named after Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld were actually leio*dids I think.
