stem gall -
Neolasioptera boehmeriae
Groton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
October 2, 2011
Size: 14mm
There were 3 of these galls on a bare stem a few feet from the edge of a swamp. I don't know what the host is, but it was mixed in with plenty of goldenrods and a few asters.

Neolasioptera
Tom, do you think the host plant could be bindweed (Calystegia)? I have seen multiple stem galls in close proximity to one another on bindweed on the same stem, and that gall is Neolasioptera convolvuli(Felt)(Diptera: Cecidomyiidae). The fly your showing appears to be a Neolasioptera.

Seems to be a plant with opposite leaves
That, combined with the wetland habitat, makes me think of
N. boehmeriae
on
Boehmeria cylindrica
. What do you think of that possibility?

False Nettle
I just went back to the wetland and found a nice patch of
Boehmeria cylindrica
in the exact spot I collected the gall.
