Backyard Arachnid - Neoscona crucifera

Backyard Arachnid - Neoscona crucifera
Auglaize County, Ohio, USA
September 24, 2011
Size: quarter sized????
The spider itself was about quarter sized when all scrunched up. It had a web at approximately 7-8 feet in height. I've been seeing a lot of these this year and am curious to figure out what they are. I have basically crossed off the poisonous spiders indigenous to the area. I think it is some type of orb weaver after some research but I am unsure.

This is a Neoscona species. You can tell Neoscona from most Araneus because Neoscona don't have the humps on the abdomen. I'm not 100% sure which species this is, but it might be Neoscona crucifera. Compare with

orbweaver
Looks very much like an orbweaver; nothing to be afraid of. I often put my hand right next to them to help my camera auto-focus on one in its web and they just freeze or run away.

The round, dented abdomen and reddish stripy legs remind me of a Marbled Orbweaver. I'd expect something in Araneus at any rate, but definitely wait for the experts; there are zillions of orbweavers.
