Myrmecocystus placodops
Looks a heck of a lot like Myrmecocystus placodops, but I don't know if the sp is in arizona (I think it is)

Thanks for the suggestion. I agree it sure looks like the images at myrmecos.net and tightloop.com/ants. And M. placodops is on the species list for AZ. I wonder if there are any really close lookalikes.
