Sternidius variegatus
I think it is Sternidius variegatus. Look at Yanega's plate 27 figure 303. That specimen is reddish brown but all the ones that I have seen from Maryland and Maine are dark gray like your beetle. The ones that I have are all from June and were collected either at UV light or on dead poplar trees and logs.

I think this is what the Ontario MNR calls Astyleiopus variegatus (Haldeman), and what BugGuide calls Liopinus variegatus. Images moved from family page to species page.

A PDF doc here lists it under A. variegatus and gives a Canadian range of New Brunswick to Alberta.
