Ant - Stigmatomma pallipes

Ant - Stigmatomma pallipes
Cornell University, Tompkins County, New York, USA
October 11, 2011
Size: ~5 mm
Curled into a defensive ball after being touched. Under a log in some woods.

Moved
This species is the only widely distributed one of the four Amblyopone in North America, and is rather abundant, if a bit cryptic, around Ithaca. They are primarily predators of geophilomorph centipedes.

Sweet
Found it. Formerly Ponerinae. Moved from Ants. No idea how to distinguish between N.A.s 3 species though.

Ponerini?
Reminded me of the trapjaw ants, which shouldn't be found in New York, but maybe one of the other Ponerini.
