Phidippus adumbratus
Found one of these climbing down my living room wall. Wish I took a photo before releasing outside. He was spectacular.
Have lived in West Los Angeles, Santa Monica all my life. NEVER seen one before.
I found this reference: "Charles Hogue in his book Insects of the Los Angeles Basin has identified this species as Phidippus formosus"
Can this be confirmed?

Gwen,
I don't know which spider you saw in your house. Best find it again and submit a photo to Bugguide.
The spider seen on this page is P. adumbratus. This is quite different from the one shown in Charles Hogue's book, which is now called Phidippus johnsoni; P. formosus is one of several synonyms.

Phidippus species -
Strangely, I've had these around my house and garden, though have also seen them closer to the mountains, i.e Eaton Canyon. This might be P. adumbratus. However, I cannot be certain beyond genus. Best to wait for someone who knows this group. Check with Lenny Vincent at Cal State Fullerton.

address
Hi Hartmut,
The address is Fullerton College, not CSU Fullerton. Common mistake. I agree with P. adumbratus, however, to be sure, I passed on her e-mail to a Phidippus expert.
