Tick Identification - Dermacentor

Tick Identification - Dermacentor
Goleta, Santa Barbara County, California, USA
June 19, 2006
Size: About a quarter inch
I found this tick on the upper-right of my waist. It must have just bitten me because it's head wasn't fully inserted into my skin. I've looked around, and it seems to either be an American Dog Tick, or a Pacific Coast Tick.

Boy, that's a tough call.
I assume you've checked out the Ticks of California website? To me, this looks a little more like D. variabilis than D. occidentalis - does your location fit their description of its range?

Moved to
genus level for now.
