Size is useful here. If this is one of the really big guys this is likely Laphria grossa, a robber fly, and one of the truly impressive insects. I think I can see some yellow on those first abdominal segments.

Actually, I went back to the
Actually, I went back to the exact spot where the photo was taken and I measured to a fixed point of reference and compared it with the same reference in the photo. The fly is actually slightly longer than 1". It is more like 1.25".
