Hi, That's one cool insect you've got there. I think it's some kind of Ichneumon wasp. Not to sure on the species though. Note the long characteristic ovipositor on the end of the abdomen, indicating that this wasp is a female.

I always thought these were ichneumons, too, but they are braconids. They can be common on logs and dead, standing trees as the females seek out woodboring beetle larvae as hosts for their offspring.

I remember seeing a wasp doing the same thing. I thought is was an ichneumon wasp. Maybe it was but I'm not sure. And when I tried to take a photo of it it flew away. It was cool though.

LOL! I've been into insects and spiders for as long as I can remember. I was 5 when I caught pill bugs from outside my house and kept them for a few days. My mom wasn't happy when one of them got away and found it the bathroom in the dead of night crawling on the wall!
