Gold-backed Snipe Flies - Chrysopilus ornatus - male - female

Gold-backed Snipe Flies - Chrysopilus ornatus - Male Female
Governor Dodge State Park (Pine Cliff State Natural Area), Iowa County, Wisconsin, USA
June 19, 2006
These two came flying by joined together and landed on a leaf near where I was standing. They appear to be some kind of syrphid flies, but I'm unable to figure out which species. The photo was taken on a high bluff above a lake, in a heavily wooded area (a stand of both pines and hardwoods).

We would guess
Chrysopilus ornatus - Gold-backed Snipe Fly. Images can be found in the guide here

Thx.
Thank you very much. I must have gone right by those in the guide.

These are Rhagionids
so you might have missed the entire family in your search. There are just too many flies!! :)
