Maculata nest rebuild - Dolichovespula maculata

Maculata nest rebuild - Dolichovespula maculata
Howell, Monmouth County, New Jersey, USA
October 12, 2011
In the last week of August 2011, a very large D. maculata nest in a neighbors tree was discovered, and so I moved the nest into a woods about 1/3rd of a mile away. Nothing went wrong with the relocation, but the queen of the nest and some workers left. On October 2nd, I looked up into the tree the nest was originally in, and attached to the exact same branch was this weird rebuilt nest. It was very active with alot of worker activity. I cut the nest down October 20th, and there were about 40 adults inside, workers and males.

Wonderful
Thanks for sharing this! The organization of a rebuild by workers without a queen is certainly a topic of interest!
