Grasshopper on Scorched Tree Trunk, Mississippi - Schistocerca americana

Grasshopper on Scorched Tree Trunk, Mississippi - Schistocerca americana
Mississippi Sandhill Cranes National Wildlife Refuge, Mississippi, USA
May 20, 2003
This handsome grasshopper was resting on a scorched pine tree, several days after a prescribed burn at the Mississippi Sandhill Cranes National Wildlife Refuge. Looking at the Grasshopper pages of the BugGuide, I see a similar photo with the insect identified as American Bird Grasshopper - genus Schistocerca. That one had been photographed in Florida. Anyone who could comment on whether this is Schistocera, and whether we can add a species name, I would be most appreciative!

Moved to guide for S. americana
Neat photo. I just saw and photographed one of these here in NC. I remember seeing your photograph, and wrote a guide for the species.

American bird grasshopper
You got it, Schistocerca americana. These are migratory insects that sometimes reach far to the northern portion of the eastern U.S. When I lived in Cincinnati we occasionally saw them right downtown, just across the Ohio River. Really shocking to see something that large in the heart of urbania:-)
