Grasshopper species - Schistocerca americana

Grasshopper species - Schistocerca americana
Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
June 21, 2006
Size: About 3"
In the field, we thought this might be a Differential, but we aren't so sure after looking at the picture.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Schistocerca americana.
This is the American bird grasshopper. Surprised to see an adult this early, but they go year-round in Florida, so maybe it got kicked up to your area by Alberto (tropical storm). They often disperse very long distances ahead of such storms.
